Lake takes

Or deep thoughts thunk on an enchanted Canadian lake during my three week hiatus from American madness.

Otty Lake. If it wasn’t already here we’d a had to invent it.

Every couple or few years we flee to the same cabin on the same lake in Ontario. This latest escape from the increasingly bizarre reality of life in Trump’s America was especially welcome and needed.

I enjoyed a blissfully Donald worship-free 4th of July, did more cycling on Ontario’s back roads than I have in years and had the privilege of observing our Mad King’s derangement from afar.

The sun also sets. Hemingway never told us that.

I kept waiting for some Canadian to come up and ask me WHF’s wrong with us. Blaming Canada for not raking its forests? More tariffs for not selling bourbon (I hate bourbon)? Putting out the flames by turning some sort of California super soaker on the north?

Oddly, nobody we met has so asked. Mostly we get the same sort of bless-your-heart, sympathetic looks afforded to anybody who is forced to keeps a deranged uncle up in the attic.

I love these people.

Ducks passing our dock in suspicious military-style formation.

On the subject of Canadian cycling:

I love riding in metrics rather than miles. I mean, 27 kilometers sounds so much more impressive than 17 miles.

I frequently passed signs that read “Drive according to road conditions.” Don’t recall ever seeing them in the USA, probably because they would be considered an open invitation to put the petal to the metal.

This because we routinely design our roads to facilitate, even encourage, faster driving than the law allows. “Not guilty, your Honor. I was only doing what the road sign told me.”

One day we had a blood red sun because of smoke. This of course is because Canadians refuse to rake their forests.

Speaking of weather (who said anything about the weather?) I know we like to say in Florida that if you don’t like the weather just wait five minutes. Same thing up here.

We had one very uncomfortable heat dome-generated night (no AC) a whole bunch of cool (70s and lower 80s) days and, of late temperatures that sank into the 50s at night and not-quite tropical force winds that kept us out of the lake and off the bike.

Like Trump, I of course blame the Canadians.

Just as we know that the Dems are controlling the weather to discourage voting in Red States, it’s pretty clear that Canadians have some sort of climate change machine designed to discourage Americans from visiting.

Dock, trees, dock.

BTW, it’s really nice coming back to the U.S. now that the war against Iran is over.

It is over, right?

I mean, He keeps saying it’s over.

A cabin in the woods. (Gee, that sounds like a great title for a slasher movie.)

Watching GNV events from afar, I see that the City is asking people to weigh in on a public art display to decorate the permanent fence that will forever more divide the 6th Street rail-trail from the Gainesville Police Department.

Nice idea. But I gotta ask:

Why the hell do we need a fence to forever more separate GPD from one of the city’s most popular rail-trails? Are the cops so terrified of e-bikers and odd street person that they can’t feel safe in their work spaces without a protective barrier?

Talk about NIMBYism in uniform.

Zoey the wonder dog keeps wondering what dangerous critters are hiding under the dock and in the wood shed.

Oh yeah, and I wanted to extend my belated sympathy to our besieged Great DeSanitizer. Despite our Guv’s best efforts to keep the Free State Of Floriduh free from free thinkers in our colleges and universities, some ultra liberal Trump-appointed judge has decided, bizarrely, that just because you work for the state in a teaching capacity you do not surrender your First Amendment rights.

“Florida seeks to strip public university professors — and by extension their students — of the ability to fully engage with ideas that are, for better or for worse, very popular in some academic circles,” Judge Brit Grant ruled.

So sad. All our anti-Ron wanted to do was shield untold number of impressionable (brainless?)students from being indoctrinated by communists and Masons and such.

Thus is freedom in Floriduh lost by judicial fiat.

That’s all folks!

Yeah, yeah. I’m heading south now.

The only thing standing between me and my little blue GNV dot is the prospect of going through customs and having my car searched for iceberg lettuce.

Speaking of which: Explosive diarrhea? Really America?

I go away for three weeks and come back to explosive diarrhea?

I can’t leave you people unsupervised for five minutes!
