Pilgrimage to a hidden Florida lake

People have been making pilgrimages, of one sort or another, to Lake Kerr – nestled in the heart of the Ocala National Forest – for a very, very long time.

Fun fact: Marion County’s second chartered town was Kerr City, on the edge of its namesake lake. It was a key stop on a once busy Florida stagecoach road.

Now it is a ghost town.

On Thursday a group of old friends, new acquaintances, blood relatives and next door neighbors gathered on the front yard of Bob Ackerman’s lakeside home for his annual Thanksgiving feast.

Our gracious host was Petey, second from the left. Accompanied by his posse.

If you didn’t know precisely where the Ackerman homestead was, you could easily get lost looking amidst the giant oaks and the thick veils of Spanish Moss that all but hide the lake from outside eyes.

It was a fine place for an annual giving of thanks.

This hidden lake tucked away in a pocket of the Ocala National Forest.
