A GNV Declaration of Independence

GRU: Owned but not controlled by the people of GNV

Long ago I named this blog FREEGNV: An Independent City because, in so many ways, GNV has been forced to function as an independent city.

We are a blue city in a red state.

Thanks to gerrymandering, we are “represented” in Tallahassee by suburban politicians who are disdainful of us and who do everything in their power to render us powerless.

Our governor considers GNV an ugly stain on the otherwise sterling Free State of Floriduh he so lovingly forged in his own imagination.

And our own county has been engaged in a decades long feud with GNV government to the point that its commissioners are the most fickle of allies.

So, yes, GNV, we are on our own.

But we are not powerless.

We the people of GNV have it in our power to reclaim the utility that we own but which has been taken away from us. By jaded politicians who want nothing more than to do our city mischief.

GNV is the only city in the history of Florida to have its municipal-owned utility taken away by legislative fiat.

Our utility is controlled by a Great DeSanitizer-appointed board that has no obligation whatsoever to operate in the best interests of We The People who actually own GRU.

The first thing that board did was rehire a man who was fired by the City Commission doing a poor job.

And as if to further rub our noses in it, The Great DeSanitizer’s puppet board proceeded to make their once and future utility manager THE HIGHEST PAID CITY EMPLOYEE IN THE HISTORY OF GNV.

As a direct result of that hijacking, GNV has lost millions of dollars in GRU revenues that once paid for police, firefighters, city parks and all manner of other city services.

As a direct result of that hijacking GNV commissioners have been obliged to raise property taxes on GRU owners rather than fire police, firefighters, close parks and curtail other vital city services.

No more, GNV!

On Friday, early voting starts for a special election that will allow GNV voters – GRU’s rightful owners – to amend our city charter AND TAKE BACK THE MUNICIPAL UTILITY THAT HAS BEEN TAKEN AWAY FROM US.

More than one court ruling has upheld the right of We The People of the Independent City of GNV to take our utility back.

This despite repeated legal maneuvers by the puppet board to keep We The People of GNV from being able to vote.

This is our decision to make GNV.

This is our Declaration of Independence. In the face of politicians who have done everything they can to deny us exactly that.

Our independence.

Vote like GNV is the Independent City we all want to believe it is.

Vote to take back our utility.

VOTE YES GNV!
