Still more signs of intelligent life in GNV

Or things I noticed while aimlessly cycling about town

Listen, I’ll be the first to admit that I cut way back on my cycling this summer.

Either because climate change is real. Or because, at 77, the brutal Florida heat and humidity that never bothered me in my younger years might as well be climate change.

But I digress.

Believe it

The mural is on a building across the street from Gainesville High School. I shot the sunset while riding to breakfast early Saturday morning.

The point is that now, with fall in the offing, I have resumed my aimless cycling excursions around GNV neighborhoods.

And these trips usually take a while…not because I’m 77, but because I keep stopping to take photos of things that catch my attention along the way.

Like these.

We’re (almost) outa here

Parking art at GHS

One of GNV’s more endearing fall rituals occurs at GHS, where students in their senior year are allowed to personalize their parking spots. Call it a final reward for hard time served.

It’s not nice to taunt Bowser

All I am sayin’ is give a dog a chance.

All I’m gonna say about these yard signs is that pit bulls, and Ron Cunningham, have feelings too.

Is GNV cursed? Or just the Gators?

Keep moving. Nothing to see here folks.

Either GNV is in hell (which would certainly explain our football season) or Halloween is on the way.

Dirt is happiness

Eddie Cochran had it wrong.

They discovered a cure for The Summertime Blues at McRorie Garden.

Growing signs

What’s all about, Porters?

Speaking of community gardens, they have figured out what it’s all about in Porters Quarters.

Stop the strife

Giving peace a chance since 2012.

It’s always nice to cycle by the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding. It reflects the ethos of GNV.

Murals, food and coffee

A feast for the eyes and for the appetite.

As long as you are at the River Phoenix Center, might as well walk across the street to the 4th Ave Food Park, grab a bite and admire the ever-changing murals.

The new guys downtown

Taking up where Emiliano’s left off.

Or maybe go downtown and try out the Burrito Factory Cantina. More than one restaurant has failed to make a go of it where Emiliano’s thrived for a quarter century. Hopefully this latest entry will have more luck.

A new start for an iconic building

In its many decades of existence the Dunbar has been a black hotel, a home for unwed mothers, a faith based frat house and a short-lived wine bar.

Now somebody’s putting a lot of money and effort into turning it into a restaurant. Recycling old buildings: A GNV tradition.

Got rust?

20th century industrial deco at the old GRU complex.

Vertical messaging

So many causes, so little time.

Listen, try getting out of your car once in a while and, instead, cycle aimlessly about GNV. You’ll be surprised at what you see.

Cycling into the sunrise

Maybe you’ll even see me out there.
