GNV to witness Florida’s ‘cage of shame’ on Aug. 9

A fitting testament to Florida’s cruel shame

If you are embarrassed and ashamed (and if you are at all human you ought to be) over Florida’s hasty assembly of an immigrant concentration camp in the Everglades, then you’ll have a chance to express your outrage on Aug. 9 at 10 a.m. at Depot Circle.

On that day, for the space of one hour, local activists will put on display a chain-link “detention center” replete with volunteer inmates.

The Cage Project “will be a silent testimony to the cruelty our country is inflicting on our immigrant population,” says Glenn Terry, event organizer. “As Florida’s governor is planning to build a “Alligator Alcatraz”-type prison near Gainesville -at Camp Blanding, a former army base- we are calling our facility, ‘Camp Cruelty.’”

Terry continues: “Protestors will stand outside Camp Cruelty with signs calling for an end to the immoral arrest of our neighbors, those rounded up by ICE and put in cages in the Everglades and in 200 other prisons throughout the country.  Seventy two percent of them have never been convicted of a crime. Many of the others have only traffic violations.”

During that hour, for every ten minutes, participants will be asked for a moment of silence “to reflect on what the 59,000 immigrants now locked up -and their families- are going through.”

On Aug. 9 Camp Cruelty will have its debut appearance at the corner of South Main Street and SW 7 St. But that’s just for openers. Terry promises that the display will pop up elsewhere around GNV once a month. “We intend to do this as long as there is a need to protest our country’s barbaric and immoral  immigration policies.”

  1. Hola, mi amigo…(just a personal note…not for publication…)

It’s been quite awhile since we had the opportunity to sit for a cup o’java and stirring the pot….so to speak. Would you be game to make the time to catch up and divine where this Hogtown Republic is headed? I’d love to have a chat, as the Dog Days descend…

There are so many quislings who are boot stomping it boggles the mind….

(And, I’m part of the Camp Cruelty crew…as well as on the Flying Pig board, and also the Heart of High Springs board, as we are aiming to restore the Priest Theatre….there Are signs of creativity in the hinterlands….!)
