Is it just me or is it the passage of time?

It seems like only yesterday.
But in fact it was 43 years ago when Jill and I spent our honeymoon in the then little-known resort town of Cancun.

Perched out on the pointy tip of the jungle-shrouded Yucatán Peninsula, Cancun had little of the cache of, say, Acapulco.
In fact, back then it was rather quiet and secluded.

Last week we returned to Cancun for our daughter’s wedding.
To find a very different sort of, um, fantasy land.

To the point that everything had a sort of surreal look and feel to it.
Almost ethereal.

At first I thought: Wow! My laser eye surgery really worked!

And then I realized that we just had lousy cameras 43 years ago.

And that my iPhone 16 Pro and its assorted apps allow me to do things with images.
Surreal, even ethereal things.
That I could never have pulled off with whatever boxy image kidnapper I was carrying way back when.

Plus, we were staying in an “inclusive” hotel.
Which meant that I could drop into any one of the 650 (give or take) bars in the resort complex.
And order whatever I wanted.
And leave without once taking out my wallet.

Honestly, after a while I just had to find a quiet place in which to lay my weary head.

And I thought: Is this a great place or what?
Which Pinocchio probably thought when he got to the Land Of Toys.
Before he, you know, turned into a donkey.

Night fell.
I didn’t.

Did I mention that we were perched on the very edge of the Gulf of Mexico? Sorry, Oh Great Orange One.

There was a party.

And talk about an eye-opener.
I was able to see things through a lens colored brightly.
Or at least my Pro 16 was.

If I ever have to flee The Autocratic Land Of Donald to a banana republic, I believe I’ll pick this one.
Yeah, that’s it.
I’ll be a Gringo In Mexico. (My favorite Maria Muldaur songs).

I’ll drink to that!
