Field notes from atop Paris

When I visit the Eiffel Tower I am less taken by the spectacular views of Paris from the top than the guts of the tower itself.

It is a giant erector set writ large.

With graceful spires that reach up into the very heavens

And strange geometric shapes that seem to shrink into themselves as they gain altitude.

There is something kaleidoscopic hidden amidst the lines and shadows of this conglomeration of iron and steel and cables and wires and plastic and imagination.

Just another roadside attraction?

I think not.
