Life is cheap in autoAmerica

Want to know what a human life is worth in autoAmerica these days?

Three years ago, Clarence Barton III was driving on Newberry Road at more than 100 miles an hour when he plowed into the back of another car, killing 13-year-old Emily Hoyos. Now the Gainesville Sun reports that, under a plea bargain agreement Barton will served three years in prison and then three years on probation. Oh, and he’ll have to pay a fine of $16,000 “in monthly $150 installments.”

But don’t think he’s getting off lightly. The guy will also have his drivers license suspended for three years. Which is as close to cruel and punishment as you can get in autoAmerica.

That’ll teach him.
