We came, we saw, we gutted it out, we went to a pub

Day 2 of our Great American Rail Trail (GART) expedition from D.C. to, eventually (we hope) the Mississippi River.

And after the spirit-crushing rains of D1 – in which we had planned to ride 59 miles and ultimately settled for a soggy 12 (Hey, we’re old guys, give us a break). – D2 turned out to be a walk in the park (metaphorically).

Let’s face it, we always look our best in the hotel parking lot just before we get on our bikes. The dog never looks her best.

In which we ride. And ride. And ride.

And ride some more.

Ditto.

Into every life a little tree must fall.

We saw some firemen either practicing rescue tactics on the Potomac River or stranding that guy that nobody in the station likes.

Oh yeah, and we saw some hikers. Actually the C&O Trail is crawling with hikers. Probably metrosexuals (guys who live in cities and enjoy shopping) who can’t hack the Appalachian Trail.

All signs lead to somewhere we must assume.

In which I once again display my awesome photographic talents.

Turns out there’s lots of water in the Potomac. Who knew?

Came upon this freak of nature. A tree in the process of ingesting a long metal pole. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Took a break by Dam #4. Walt refused to get back on his bike.

Did I mention that the Potomac consists mostly of water?

To prove you’re not a robot, click on every image with a bicycle.

Got a bit fatigued before it was all over and we rolled into Williamsport. But by and large, we found this section of the C&O to be quite bike friendly and uber scenic.

Seriously, we’re lucky nobody plunged into the old canal while gaping in awe at all the water.

There’s a wild rumor going around that we might even be on a paved trail for much of D3.

We shall see. We shall see.

Oh, and then we went to a pub.
